So I'm not a Morgan person, as the last Morgan I sent in for grading I thought was going to grade 64PL or at least 64 Star. Came back 63, no star or PL.

This coin has very strong mirrors on both sides, but I don't know what exactly I'm looking for as far as PL vs DMPL

I know it's hard to tell from the pics if it's PL or DMPL but we'll see how it goes

I'm guessing I should leave it in the GSA when I submit it

It looks like it has a chance. I know that they have changed their standards, so it really depends on how reflective the fields are. The reverse is questionable to me.

A nice 63...should be a + but too many marks for a 64. Almost a PL but mirrors need to be consistent on both sides.

Not a 64. 63 is correct. When you do the finger test, is the reflected image of your finger clear at least 2 inches from the surface? Be sure to make sure that you are not mistaking the reflection on the holder.

For DMPL, the image must be clear at least 8 inches away.

Both sides have to meet these criteria to get the designation.

A strong 63. I see nice fields but not reflective enough for PL. No way a DMPL. Yes, leave it in the GSA holder if you decide to submit.

    1. Leave it in the GSA holder. IMO it would be borderline PL from what I've seen.

If it goes PL this could easily have a chance at 64. I have seen worse in 65 PCGS holders.

MS64 knowing how the frost breaks reflect light. Good shot at PL as well and definitely keep it in the GSA. Pretty girl...

NGC seems to go easy on the '82, '83 and '84 CC GSA's. I can see this easily being a 64 from NGC, I would not be surprised if it even came back as a 65. DO NOT take that coin out of the GSA holder, it will lose a premium instantly without even being graded. As far a PL/DMPL? I think it has a shot at PL, but I am not sure how much of a stickler they are on the reverse frost in the field.

PCGS has given the DMPL blessing multiple times with this particular die. Here is an MS-64 DMPL that was struck from the exact same die as yours.

I have a '84 CC MS64 DPL GSA. They are more common than you might think.

@BigTee44 , based on your latest pictures, it has a chance. Remember though, the entire field needs to have that level of relfectivity.

I think it should grade MS63 level, but coins in GSA holders tend to get leniency. I definitely would keep it in the GSA holder. Do you have the blue clam shell box and a cert that begins with the number 84? For GSA collectors, that's also important, especially for the common date GSA morgans.

Wayne Miller wrote about this particular die pair in his encyclopedia. Noting the halo around the eagle. Ive always wanted one of these. PM me if you dont get the grade you were hoping for Big Tee.

    64 dpl is my wag

It's funny, I came across a dealer yesterday who had this exact die pair in a GSA holder that he was sending in to NGC. He would not entertain offers until it came back. I told him it would probably come back 64DMPL. It also had some toning on the obverse and a little on the reverse.
