Saw this coin on Cointalk from members SteveX and TIF , when this one came along for a modest price, I didn't hesitate, I like the Apollo enface, the mussel and the colour of this coin. Please Show your Aeolian coins , thanks
Very appealing, and with a notably non-squashed nose! That's usually such a problem with front-facers. Mine has a rather dark patina, causing the usual difficulties with photography... AEOLIS, Grynion (alt. spellings: Gryneion, Gyrnion, Grynium, others) 4th century BC Æ 17 mm, 3.7 gm Obi: laureate head of Apollo facing slightly left Rev: ΓΥΡΝΗΙΩΝ; mussel shell Ref: SNG Ashmolean 1445-6; SNG Copenhagen 202-4
I encountered the same spelling variations, but your coin states clearly GYRNION and on the map above its Gyrneion , so I think thats the way to go. I love mussels, in Paella as made by my spanish wife : or just cooked in white wine or water, vegetables, garlic and a French baguette:
All of them which have the name spelled out in full show Y before R (that I recall), so I was puzzled about the transliteration. Somewhere I vaguely recall coming across an explanation for the more often seen modern spelling. I bet @Roman Collector or one of our other language whizzes could explain it. [drool]
