Fantastic coin Aidan, your Nero would probably be rated rare now, might have been a few more around when RIC I was first published but as they all disappear into collections, get lost or corrode nice specimens like yours aren't seen to often. I have noticed and you may have also some coins that are rated rare in RIC you seem to see a lot off putting a doubt over their true rarity.

Yes, for the later RIC volumes in particular, the rarity ratings aren't useful as LRBs are probably under-represented in the museum collections consulted by the authors and many coins from behind the Iron Curtain have appeared on the market since, diluting the rarities.

Some coins seem to be made from Unobtainium, while the references will suggest they're relatively common and vice versa. I know someone who has an example of Tiberius RIC 81 or 82 (the one with the head right, the head left is much more common) and while it's listed as Scarce, he's only seen one other online, over many years of looking.

I know Rasiel Suarez (dirtyoldcoins, Tantalus) was mining eBay and all the online auctions he could find to get prices and sales occurrences of more-or-less every ancient coin - over several years, that should give a good idea of what's on the market.

    ATB,
    Aidan.

I'll show two very different dupondii. Securitas is Lugdunum mint with ball on the point of the bust and no denomination mark. If you removed the green patina, the metal would be yellow orichalcum and all right thinking collectors would be after your hide for ruining a decent coin.

The Rome mint (no ball on bust) Victory not only has a radiate crown but II in exergue naming it a dupondius. Since it has no patina (river coin?) you can see the yellow metal.

That's a massively beautiful coin, @Ancient Aussie ! I like the high relief of the portrait.

This is my only Nero portrait coin.

Ancient Aussie, does the coin look like your pictures in hand or the CNG auction pictures? Not to highjack your thread, but your pictures make the coin look a lot better than the CNG ones, which I've noticed before. Just surprised again how poor their image color representation is.

Yes they don't do themselves any favours when it comes to true color presentation of there coins, the last two I have bought looked grey on their web site but when I received them I was pleasantly surprised at the Macedon's dark green and the recent arch is a light chocolate brown. Although I am confused as whether it is my graphics card in this 2011 laptop because the Nero arch did look brown on my OPPO 2017 smartphone.

Here are the two Neros I have owned to date. The Salus denarius wasn't the greatest example, but it looked better than it does in these old scans.

The dupondius was the one I affectionately referred to as "The Space Shuttle Dupondius", for the way Victory's wing looks (as though there's a space shuttle blasting off right behind her head).

The denarius came from @Aethelred in 2007, as an addition to my first Roman collection. The dupondius came from Mike Vosper, for my second Roman collection (the 12 Caesars set), and was swapped to @Aethelred in 2013. I haven't had a Nero since, but I'd like to find a nice example of one of his Alexandrian tetradrachms with the galley reverse someday.

Yes I have to admit I like the galley tet as well and would love one in my collection because after all it is architecture :D I see them regularly but the reasonable quality coins aren't cheap and although I have been in a position to bid on a couple of nice ones there has been another coin in the auction that I have prioritized funds and just had to win. I should just pm you to bid.;)
