@TheRed Nice coins my friend! I also LOVE Seleucid coins and although I am collector of all areas (Roman persian islamic byzantine ) but I could manage to acquire a good 9 Seleucid coins from various rulers . Here is some of highlights of my collection.. These are from Antiochus I (The ekbatana mint which is very rare one) , Antiochus II (it has a cut but still a nice example in EF condition) and Antiochus VII with eagle on back, Demetrius I and demetrius II (This one is one of my best coins very nice eye appeal I got it last month in CNG)
Great Tet @TheRed ! And super Tet posts everyone! My only Seleukid Tet: Seleukid Seleukos I 312-280 BCE AR Tet 14.46g Seleucia on Tigris. Zeus - Athena driving a quadriga of 4 horned elephants SC 130
That is a great collection of Seleucid tets @arashpour I like them all. Your Antiochus I Ekbatan is beautiful and is rare which is always a great combination. The Seleukos I tet from Babylon with the pellet below the MI is also a variant that isn't seen very often. CNG has been selling a lot of Seleucid tets recently. Must have been a collection consigned to them. Very nice tet @Alegandron I have always wanted an elephant quadriga one, but have yet to get one.
@TheRed Thanks for comments. you have a sharp eye and good guess yes that seleukos with pellet below MI is a rare one and got in last CNG auction which came from a collection. and the antiochus ekbatan one is one of my best coins and I love it' sharp relief and golden toning.
Is 1987 recent enough? Mine was also Antiochus I when I got it and I have not kept up on Seleucids at all. Then, as now, I am not in the bracket to support collecting tetradrachms or the books that catalog them. When you say 'their book' do you refer to this one? This is part one in two volumes. What is the status of the rest of the 'parts'? https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ch...seleucus_i__antiochus_iii/106827/Default.aspx
Missing some images, but they started to put that book online http://numismatics.org/sco/ I did a post on it here. Volume 2 came out a few years ago.
I'm a lover of Seleucids as well! (Along with a lover of too many other genre of ancient coinage as well.) Anyway, for an Antiochus II representative in my collection I held out for an Antiochus II portrait... it's just a drachm though... not a tetradrachm... but it IS "Junior's" portrait. Antiochus II, AR Drachm Mint: Uncertain Mint 30 (probably Northern Mesopotamia) Weight: 4.2 gr. Diam.: 18 mm. Attrib.: SC_581 (Technically: SC_C581, which itself should be divided into 2 entries as this coin clearly has no lower control -- just the one in the left field.)
Not quite sure this tetradrachm is Antiochus III Oddly the obverse looks much better than the reverse Mint: Antioch on the Orontes, ca. 204 - 197 BC Diameter: 28 x 28.5 mm, Weight: 17.12 g Ref.: SC 1044.4b; WSM 1098; Le Rider, Antioche, Series III-IV, 136-53 Obverse: Youthful, diademed head of Antiochos III r., horn above ear Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY Apollo Delphios seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in right hand and resting left on bow at his side; ΔI monogram outer left, Φ in exergue
Yes, cmezner, that is an Antiochus III portrait. And your attribution is correct. Antiochus III's likeness is described as florid style, godlike portrait, and idealized features in the SC reference. I very much like BOTH sides of your example. The reverse is better than the obverse in terms of centering.
Yes, that is the book. $215 is fairly high, I think CNG is now selling it for $175. As David@PCC noted, a lot of the two volumes of Houghton & Lorber is now online.
That's a beauty, @TheRed ! I'd have trouble resisting that one too. I don't know how I missed this thread, I guess I've been zoned out a bit with my spring allergies. Also, great avatar but I miss your 1920's football player image Here are mine. Nothing new here but I do plan to add to this collection in the near future.
Thanks @Deacon Ray I love your collection of bronze Seleucids. The facing Antiochus I is quite nice, but the Demetrios I takes the cake. Just the other day I was trying to put together an image for a post I am writing on Seleukos I Nikator and thought if only I could borrow Deacon Ray's souls for a little while out would make the task a lot easier. I think I'm going to go back to the old image. The coin is just to similar to other ones.
Thanks, @TheRed ! I find the portraits on the Seleucid coins to be very beautiful and the bronze coins are still reasonably priced.
