Hi Everyone, I'm looking to expand my collection, particularly in the field of Chinese Coins. I am worried about the high quality fakes, does anyone have a list or any suggestions of dealer websites that carry high quality genuine graded Chinese Coins? Like antique coins, provincial and republic silver/copper. No Pandas. Thanks, Peter Z
I find ebay to still be the best place for this if buying from reputable dealers. Vendors from Hong Kong and China often get lumped in together, but there are good ones who don't sell fake coins and/or fake slabs. One reputable HK based seller I've dealt with before is dragoncarmen. If you're for looking someone based in the US check out ebay seller 2007chuan. The photography leaves much to be desired, but a lot of legitimately authenticated coins of the type you mentioned above.
With regards to reputable sellers, Wattwat is a good one as well. He sells good common pieces, and makes $5 shipping worth it (tape, package, tape, small box, tape, stamp wrapper, tape, bubble wrap, actual coin in 2x2) Watch out for snipes though. The things also take a while to get to the US, but coming from Hong Kong this should be no surprise.
Thanks for all the responses, but sometimes I dont have the best experience on ebay. Anyone know any dealers specializing or having quality Chinese/Asian coins on their website? Especially dragon dollars. Thanks
You're covered by eBay if something goes wrong. The good thing is for what you're looking for they will all have pictures from PCGS so you can match everything up if you're overly concerned about a seller. Just stay away if it seems to good to be true.
Major auction houses - just be prepared to pay an arm or leg for some really high quality Chinese coins. Bargain and genuine high quality Chinese coins do not mix like oil and water. I managed to hunt down almost all province coinage and it was a real challenge. I would not dare to start it from scratch again.
try bidding from those ebay sellers that people mentioned like 2007chuan. Also if the coin is NGC, pull up the cert and compare the pictures to make sure NGCs photo of the pic matches up to the one being sold (people can switch the coins)
The problem with Chinese coins is that there are soooooo many fakes and of high quality. Unless I'm very sure of the seller or the coin is graded, I wouldn't trust most sellers on eBay. That's the main reason I've stayed away from Chinese coins and antique silver items. Heritage have many older Chinese coins especially in their Hong Kong auction. They have a smaller one coming up in June where they have many 19th and 20th century coins and ingots, some certified by NGC or HuaXia. In any case, I would check the certification thoroughly or send them in for certification, if raw.
@1934 Wreath Crown, do you have the link for the heritage june auction, I cant seem to find it. Thanks
