I just came back from the barbershop with a horror story to share. To set the scene: My barber, Jack, as a hobby, custom makes guitars in addition to playing them.

During the normal bull session (old-fashion barbershop), the conversation came around to business, money and coins. Jack suddenly says that he had something to show me and pulled out a guitar pick that he had made. He said that it was silver that used to be a dime.

Not sure that I wanted an answer, I asked, "What kind?", to which he replied, "a 1916 Mercury". :rolling: He didn't know the mint mark. In his defense, he did say that it was the worst of the 40 - 50 mercs that he had; so worn out that the date could barely be read.

He has promised that he will bring in the rest of them so that I can check them out. :smile He also promised that he would never ever make another coin pick again unless it was post 1964. :smile:smile

So, does anyone else want to add a favorite story, good or bad?

Oh, I wasn't knocking guitar players, it was just what he choose that I objected to. Jack told me that a friend had loaned him a Navajo-made turquoise/silver pick and it changed the whole resonance of the strings. It probably had something to do with the resiliency/springiness of the silver. That reminds me, I need to get back to him and get those other dimes out of his hands before something else happens!!:D:D:D

heres a nice horror story from my dad. back in the early 60's my dad had a complete set of 1909-1958 wheat cents including the 1909S VBD, 1909S, 1914D, 1922, and 1931S. it was a COMPLETE set. since this was in the 60's these coins had to been in nice shape. anyways his brother that is now my uncle wanted to buy ice cream at school. he didn't have any money but rembered the lincoln set my dad got for his birthday. so he pops all of these coins out of the holders and guess what? takes them to school and buys ice cream for all of his friends. my dad did find out about this and told his mom. my uncle got a pretty nice butt wooping for that. another story i have is from my grandmal. a LONG time ago she had a huge jar of flying eagle cents, indian, and wheat cents just lying around in her closet. my dad still rembers it was a pretty large jar filled to the top with just these old cents. the house they were living in caught on fire and melted the glass jar and all of the old coins in there. and to top it all off she threw it away! :desk:i almost died when i heard this story its almost too much.
