Can you believe this. How lucky is this guy? who knows what could be in there. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11944&item=3950918852&rd=1&tc=photo
Well, at least he's stating up front that all but 4 of the coins in the 4 oz lot will be wheat cents. Usually, you don't find that out until after you receive them.
I take it that you've seen similar things before on eBAY? I have never seen anything like that in my life, not that I've really been around an environment where I would, but the number of coins in that trunk must be amazing. This guy is going to make a mint from this....(I think.)
He'll probably end up with a lot of negative feedback and unhappy customers out of this. There are always auctions like this one and, invariably, even if they had good feedback before they started these lots, they end up with their feedback in the toilet and being trashed on the forums. Most of the auctions of this type are not "estate finds", they are coins bought on eBay and then resold. And please don't ever believe the "unsearched" statement. Here is a link to the other collection/lots coin auctions on eBay. It is very rare to find a seller of lots of this type with a feedback rating above 99% and usually it's around 98 or lower. http://coins.listings.ebay.com/Coin...ListQQsojsZ1QQsosortorderZ2QQsosortpropertyZ2 Sorry, on the surface I know it looks cool, but really not a good deal.
I was just impressed by the sheer magnitude of the number of coins that were in the trunk. If it is genuinely someone's trunk full of coins, then I'm impressed. However, what you've provided me with a link to indicated that maybe that it's far too common to be 'genuine', although I found that the pictures you provided links to were of a more suspicous nature than the picture of the coins in the trunk. Some of the other ones were just a small number of coins together, while the trunk appears to be filled, although they could have a put a tray down just an inch or so and fill it up. In any event, I was not even thinking of purchasing any coins from this, but the magnitude caught my eye. I'm a little embarassed at my reaction however. I should know a little better, I think...
Don't ever be embarassed by the excitement that comes with coin collecting! The first couple of times I saw auctions like that, I felt the same way. Now, I've seen so many people get burned by purchasing them that I always address that first. I have seen a lot of scenarios (especially on eBay) and have gotten burned myself a couple of times so my first reaction is always to protect someone else from suffering the same fate. Don't ever lose that excitement - it's part of what makes this hobby great
He's selling 190 1/4-pound lots. How much space does 45 pounds of coin take up? Must be much less than a full trunk...
My bathroom scales are on the blink so I can't be accurate, but I'm guessing this coffee can full of pennies weighs about 30 lbs. I would think that that trunk should hold more than a couple of coffee cans full of coins.
lol my favorite one is "ABSOLUTELY THE BEST COIN LOT DEAL ON EBAY!" (haha everyone has the best deal...lol) I do enjoy looking at this lot auctions, but I don't bid on them...
Quantities of coins aren't that unusual. I have 10 bags of wheats right now in the shop...5000 coins per bag. I've been shipping 20-30 bags per month for the last year or two. Same with silver certificates...I've had a few hundred up to several thousand every month for years. Don't be fooled by photos showing lots of coins...large accumulations are far more common than many people think. Nick
I have found that if your going to buy coins in a lot your going to find that 10-20& are going to be bad and not worth collecting. I use to buy silver coins in bags and lots. I would remove the bad ones and repackage the good ones. I would then stamp the obverse side with a SK to really end their life and then send them to a smelder. Doing this I was sure that I wouldn't have them show up in another lot down the road. catman
Very interesting, I have quite a few coins that have had stamped letters on them. I'll have to look to see if I have one of yours!!. Anybody else got found any of the catmans counterstamped coins?!?!
Total rip-off. For $10 you get 30-35 wheat pennies, 2 common Bufflo or 1940s Jefferson nickels, and 2 junk silver coins (probably dimes), retail value $2.50 tops. Rule of Thumb: Coin Grab Bag on Ebay = Run, run far far away!!!
What amazes me is that, no matter many negatives a seller gets for these lot auctions, people keep buying. Why do they think they will get a better deal than the last 50 buyers who weren't happy? It makes no sense to me.
I think is "maybe" because of the "unsearch lot" words...they sell it as...you were going to find a lost treasure...I guess people find interesting the fact tha the coins are "unsearch"...and like the "wow let's see what I could find"...Ive been tempted myself...just for the fun of it...but thinking to throw away my money that way instead of spending it on coins I need to help me complete my collection makes me get on the rail again!
Look thru his past purchases....Rolls of V nickels in AG & G., Rolls of cheap Walkers, etc. He probably bought the trunk empty at the estate sale. Its a rip-off.
