Hey everybody, first I have to let you know that as soon as I pick up a better camera (this weekend) I'll get out some pix of the half eagle I was talking about yesterday 12/17. On to my post. Being new to all of this, I have just been picking up coins that I seem to like. I've noticed that there seems to be two very seperate camps when it comes to collection coins. The first are the pre WWII coin collectors. They seem to want the older silver and historic coins. Morgan Dollars, liberty dimes ect. The second and it always seems to be the dealers and collectors in there late 20's (in suits) are the post WWII coin collectors. They seem to always be on the lookout for the PERFECT coin. History doesnt seem to matter much to them its all about the next ms or pf 69 they can aquire. Does this seem accuate or do I still have lots to learn.
well, i think yes, there are the 2 camps you talked about, but i dont think it stops there. i think there are as many camps as there are collectors. Each collects to his or her own likes. Some lie in the confines of what you described, but i think mlst are more in that 'grey' area in between. myself? i am more towards the old coins. but i like collecting newer coins at times as well
I'm like Daggarjon. I collect old and modern coins, put prefer and concentrate the most on 19th century coins. It would be hard to break it down into just two big "camps" as opposed to a multitude of very specific niches. And most of us fall into more than one of these groups. Thats what makes the hobby interesting. Guy~
I think the idea of dividing collectors into two camps is largely accurate. In my own collection, I treat post-WW2 coins as bullion coins. If two coins were considered to have the same numismatic value, I would much prefer a better date VF Morgan than an MS69 or MS70 modern coin or commemorative.
