Due to corrosion, I suppose I will never know the variety unless @Marshall or @Jack D. Young knows! Is there any trick to make this more pleasant on old copper?

The reverse rules out most of the varieties with the position of the leaf to "D" and the lack of berry next to the T of CENT- looks like reverse H of S-235 & 236. The position of E over the hair looks like S-236, so that is my best guess.

The problem with color change is that altering a coin, to hide flaws is not usually the best practice, this coin is pretty rough.

Rev is that of S-234, 235, and 236. Wave of hair below the center of the E in LIBERTY nails it as S-236. On 234 that wave is between the B & E, on 235 it is below the upright of the E.
