According to Krause the 1912B had an original mintage of only 50,211, and the only condition given a value is Unc, at $15,000.

There are also proof restrikes around, but they are also valued pretty high, at $4,500.

You either have a real find, or a fake. I won't even hazard a guess which, but if I saw an XF 1912 on EBay, I'd make my standard bid of $7.50, minus the S/H listed.

Thanks for the reply, where is the mintmark?
    Or are they all B?

I'm not sure where the Bombay mintmark is supposed to be, as I can't find it in the Krause picture, but:
If you can't find a "B" with the piece in hand, that's more evidence of fakery.

To me, the linked image is more reminiscent of a Chinese fake than a genuine coin, both in color and general appearance. If your friend was the buyer, he/she should weigh the coin upon receipt and my guess is it will be in the 22 gram range, rather than the correct 26.9658.

Certainly a fake, note the way Britannia's cape melts into the field - thats not wear, thats evidence of casting.

On the British Trade dollars the mintmark was on the middle prong of Brittainia's trident.

The seller claims that the weight is correct, but he did not know where the mint mark is supposed to be. I told him where to look, and also pointed out that many high value coins are counterfeited with the correct metal and weight.

With only 5+ hours left in his auction, and a high bid equal to just over $10, let's see if he takes my advice to cancel the auction and get the coin authenticated. I'll be shocked if he does, but if he later tells me it turned out to be real I'll be looking for a defensive lineman to give me a proper kick in the rear for not buying it!

The Value of 1912 British Trade Dollar

It is actually only about US$50 for UNC according to my manual.

I believed the date you mentioned for the 50,211 circulation is 1921B.

6 specimens is known to exist (therefore the price is very very high)

Maybe I can see some "genuine" 1921B around in EBAY soon
