Mrs. Jo.... Welcome to the hobby of kings and us regular folk too. Fair warning... Coin collecting is a lifelong addiction. There is something for everyone..... A little buffalo trivia for you.... The mint erred when they created that coin and placed the date on a very pronounced area on the coin. As a result the dates wore off many of them. I have a big satchel of no-date buffalo's that I give away to kids..... Enjoy and don't feel overwhelmed. Just find a spot that interests you and jump on in. There's plenty of room!
The cent is damaged. Copper is a soft metal. Something hit it, moving the metal. Your nickel is type 2.
I just like old stuff period. I have bullets from the civil war, I'm a history junkie. I just love knowledge...
Since 1959 was the first year for the memorial cent, MANY of them were saved. Nice specimens go for a dollar or so.
Your next step should be to get a "Red Book" which has oodles of information about American coins. Doesn't even have to be new since the prices in them are moderately meaningless, but do show the range of values. Looking up specific coins on e-bay can be educational, but resist the urge to start buying without giving it some thought.
Got that one in change the other day at the store. My husband got the 45 wheat penny today after getting gas...
I dont want to buy any coins...I rather come across them by chance.. they mean more to me that way...not in this for monetary gain... just wanna have fun with it all.
If you have a friend that works at a bank by happenstance.... Ask them to keep their eyes opened for unusual change. Was a fellow posted a few months back.... Had a killer collection simply from change that had crossed into the bank tellers window.
When my husband went to the garbage dump last week he found a bunch of Canadian money and french money and even had a coin in there from Africa... My father in law did a lot of traveling in his days so we have money from places like Honduras and the Caribbeans too...
You sound like many of us...... Like @Kentucky says..... It starts so innocently.... For me, my mom handed me a Franklin half to buy school lunch with in the 1960's. Such a simple thing.... Now if I had to clear me bedroom for a fire... It would be a difficult decision getting my wife or my coin safe out first..... Just kidding... My dog would be first.....
We have a 10,000 $ bill with Saddam on it from the bank of Iraq. Money from the trinity ...I just like looking at it all.
Ok you guys. Thanks for all the info... and chit chat was nice too. But I got a 2 year old to tend to now that his nap is over. Be back tomorrow with more questions Im sure!!! Till then take care
