Hello every one, I have a 1997 penny with an unusual date. This is the way it looks on the coin. 11997 .Exactly. Any ideas where I can look?
It'll be very hard to say without seeing some photos. Things that can make a coin look like that include "machine doubling" (which happens when the coin is being ejected and doesn't add value), post-mint damage (something hit the coin and pushed up metal looking like another 1), debris stuck to the coin, and toning (darkening of the coin's surface). Welcome to CoinTalk!
Probably a Plating Blister to the left of the number 1 since it's a 1997 But without a picture I can only make a conjecture
Another possibility is the "1" took a full hit and some of the metal moved to one side leaving the shadow of a second "1". Only a picture can help us determine the reason you are seeing what you say.
Yes that’s possible but they are side by side with a space between them no shadowing . Also when I tilted the coin you can see that it is raised like the other numbers Thank you for responding and I will upload a photo .
Every now and again the stars align just right. And a common mint anomaly creates a cool piece like you own.... Common occurrence, but way way cool! Nice find and welcome to CT.
