I have a roll of silver quarters that as soon as they got to a bank, the branch manager bought the roll and placed it in a plastic coin tube. That was in 1962. Now Ive been given that roll, only problem is that, the coins wont come out. Not from corrosion but a change in the plastic made them extremly tight around the coins. They are complelty stuck in the roll. What should I do?
Wow, wish I had this problem. My first try would be to whack the roll on a hard surface to see if I could break the coins loose and let them come out. My second try tould be to whack it till I broke the plastic tube. Wait to see what others say.
Problem is, these are MS 68 coins that probably hold quite the premuim. Trying to be as safe as possible
How could you possibly know that they are MS 68? The best you could know is that they are MS 60. OK, be careful when you whack them, and instead of whacking them hard enough to break the roll, perhaps score them with a sharp knife and break the roll that way.
Becuase the lid came off but the coins won't come off so I can see the top and bottom coin, maybe MS68 is an exxageration but all of the are uncirculated
I would suggest scoring the plastic roll with something like an Exacto Knife, wrap it in a towel and start hitting it with a blunt object.
Maybe the tube got squished. If so, maybe lightly squeezing an elongated side would work. You could take the plastic tube off with a dremel, like a doctor removes a cast. Possibly setting the tube in a warm windowsill for a couple hours could soften/expand the plastic enough for the coins to come out. Bang it like a ketchup bottle. Carefully unwrap the roll inside the tube and remove 1 coin at a time? ...I'm just brain-storming, good luck.
Put the roll in the freezer until the silver coins have shrunk enough more than the plastic to slide out freely. Would you please let me know if this works?
Show us a picture of the Quarters in the tube.. This might give us a clue on how to proceed. Also to grade that top coin
Well, I've already dumbly proceeded with a sereated knife to cut the tube in half. Has not been cut through yet.
The dots on the top coin is me trying to release any inner pressure. BTW it maybe too late becuase I mutilated the tube but does it hold more premuim stuck like it is?
This. Go slow, take your time scoring the plastic. I assume this is a hard plastic. You could try heating up your knife to aid in cutting the plastic. The key would be to get close enough to the quarters to break the plastic free without cutting the quarters.
I think the idea here is that the metal will shrink more than the plastic, but I don't feel it would be enough to get the coins free. I think heating the plastic from the outside with a hair dryer might work better. Good luck to the OP and let us know how it goes. I wish I had this problem, it's a nice score just in silver.
