Hi Everyone, First post but I've been lurking for a while. Just wondering what your thoughts on this coin might be (grade, value, etc). I was thinking about sending it in to ANACS for grading. Thanks in advance.
Wow , very nice I would also agree on the XF grade. I would be suspicious whether or not its been cleaned though.
i think it looks to be about ef-49 to au-51 has a lot of detail even though its been cleaned very nice coin. 99 over 98 with the 98 reverse looks very good
jjdig Welcome to the forum, and a very nice coin that you have there, assuming that it is genuine. Have you considered having it slabbed?
To be honest I suspect it's counterfeit. Look at the differing 13 star varieties in the link and it appears the 9s on the OPs coin are all wrong. http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dol...rs/1799_silver_dollars/1799_silver_dollar.htm
the above attribution is wrong this is not the 99/98 but, it is a b-8 1799 normal date w/ 1 and 7 tilted to the right and both 9s are tilted to the left. the 9/8 nearly touches the bottom of the bust...the date in this example clearly does not. 1799 Obverse Stars Arranged 7 left & 6 right Normal Date/9’s without Spurs LIBERTY evenly spaced between stars Variety: BB-165, B-8, R-2/[3 depending on die state] on the revers, one diagnostic is the rough area inside the top loop of and to the right of S2. i initially thought this was a result of being holed then, professionally plugged. there is also a series of lumps over the D and to the right, at the end of the wing tips. these lumps occur on later die states perhaps as a result from die rusting...i don't know. this must be an early intermediate die state because, from the pics, i do not see any other notable cracks developing. one would need to see which die was used on the edge to confirm authenticity. here is the cardinal example for reference; this piece has obviously been cleaned. the orange/brown remnants around the obverse stars if is the color that should be displayed throughout the coin's surface...regardless, this is an xf piece that would probably holder with any grading service if authentic...very nice coin with a relatively great strike. see this scrubbed out pcgs 1799. http://cgi.ebay.com/1799-PCGS-VF-20...ryZ11976QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem [Reiver, Jules, The United States Early Silver Dollars 1794 to 1803]
Welcome to the forum Mark! Is there anything you could point out that might help determine if this is genuine. Just looking for pointers. I guess I need to start signing posts as "as the other mark" to keep up with the franks.
Thanks Mark. The coin looks "off" to me, though I am not certain precisely, how. Unfortunately, sometimes when I see a counterfeit I know it looks wrong, but can't articulate it in exactly what way. This coin might be OK, but my caution bells are sounding. Below is a link to a website with images and discussion of some well known counterfeit Bust Dollar types, though many of them are quite obvious/crude. I think there is a website with examples of less obvious counterfeits, but I am having trouble locating it at the moment. If I can find it I will check back in. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/reidgold/draped_busts/page_7.html
Thanks all for articulating what I was thinking, I was jsut trying to be nice to a newbie and that was why I suggested that he get it slabbed.
Okay I weighed it and it was 27 grams and the diameter is 40 millimeters. The edge lettering is "Hundred Cents One Dollar Or Unit" with various symbols between the words. Joe
Well I would say that the weight is pretty much in line...other than that I have no idea. I looked at this coin long and hard and I see nothing that makes me feel that it is fake but I've been wrong many times before. When you send it off for grading make sure you let us know what it comes back as! Speedy
I am fairly confident that this coin is real. It has AU details.. I would suggest sending it to ANACS, and please let us know the results if you do.
