I have the book by Bowers on Morgan dollars, but wanted to know if any others would be helpful. I did come across a book by Fey on the top VAMs and it looks good, but costs $30 and I'm wondering if it's worth it. Let me know what you think!
Buy the $30 book used. Or here it is new on eBay for $15: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Top-100-Mo...033809?hash=item3d621c67d1:g:Sz0AAOSwzRFacSpB. Amazon doesn't always have the lowest prices...
Although the book's greatest value isn't in its VAM listings (VAMworld is vastly superior), I second the suggestion. My copy was stolen some years back, but it's an excellent advanced reference. Also, and for what it may be worth, PCGS Books has Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia available online for free (I assume the OP was referring to Bowers' Morgan "red book").
Being as both are Bowers', I was just trying to clarify. Either way, though, I should have provided the link... https://www.pcgs.com/books/ Good luck!
As mentioned, Wayne Millers book is filled with good info. John Highfill collaborated a very long but very good book as well Edit: its also a worth a visit over at the SSDC > Society of Silver Dollar Collectors website. IIRC there is like 20+ pages worth of reading over there for free, maybe even more than that i havent been back over there in a few years
Good books include, but are not limited to: The Red Book of Morgan Dollars (I think this is the Bowers book you refer to) The VAM Book shown above The Wayne Miller Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook Wonders of Morgan Dollars (available directly from Leroy Van Allen) The Top 100 VAMs, as well as other specialized attribution guides. The Highfill book has some good stuff in it, including snapshots of the early years of TPGs and Morgan dollars (it was produced in the early '90s) but it is too big.
