I've had this penny for a while. Wondering if its fake or an error coin.. It weighs 2.5 and is a bit larger then a normal penny.any ideas?
I don't disagree with that. I was on the fence for a forged cent from the obverse photo. Whatever was done to the cent certainly gives it a cartoonish appearance.
But the OP also says it is larger in diameter than a regular cent. I can see maybe a sandblaster playing around one day.... But how would they increase the diameter of the cent?
Yea it does look cartoonish. My mom found it and gave it to me so I really don't know what happened to this penny before she found it.maybe some one did intentionally damage it
When I was a few years younger, I recall ppl trying to squash cents to make them quarter size for use in vending machines. Until ppl realized that a penny doesn't squish like a gummy worm and give up.
Welcome to CT @Claarsonya27. Would you place a regular cent directly on top of this one so we could see how much larger it is? Just curious. Steve
the 2nd picture has a regular cent on top of the other cent. 2008 normal on top of the squashed 1984.
Thanks @Clawcoins, I missed that. I didn’t click on that photo because I thought it was the same coin taken with a flash. My bad. Steve
it's been de-plated, and the person who did is probably the same one who enlarged it.... Both are PMD for the coin.
Your 1984 cent has what is called a 'cud'....You can learn about cud's here... https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/cud-error-on-coins-768438
I did look up the cud error. I went through so pennys and finally found that one so I guess that's my first actual error coin
Place a zinc cent between two pieces of leather and hit with a hammer and it will enlarge it. This also causes damage to the plating. Sometimes called "Texas" cents.
Yes the edge does look odd like it flattened on purpose. I know its nothing special now. Just some one messed with the coin for some reason
