Another one from today's batch. Not really what I collect but I found it while looking for a "Gothic" florin. The price was right and it had nice eye appeal to me.
From a Japanese auction recently, missed out on my 'goal' coin, but this was a nice consolation prize. Nowadays there are a few slabbed (and pricey), but this one is raw (pricey, but much less so), and accompanied by a JNDA (Japanese Numismatic Dealer's Association) certificate. It's from the post war era, and the issuing authority is 'Government of Japan', a transitional time before the new constitution was put in place for the current government system. The 50 sen denomination survived the war. Previously in silver, this is the 'large size brass' type featuring the phoenix obverse, and the reverse with fish/rice/hammer etc. The first year of minting was in 1946 and the coins weighed 4.5 grams. By the next year even that much brass exceeded the face value so a new coin was minted, weighing in at 2.8 grams (naturally called the 'small size brass'). The entire mintage for the large size in 1947 was supposed to have been recalled/withheld/never released. However, some coins escaped and there are large size 50 sen coins on the market. Heritage sold off one in 2011 for example. This one appears to have a wee bit of environmental issues, though I am a LITTLE tempted to see if NCS could do something to make sure the surface stays stable. I'm hesitant though because the JNDA certificate photo might not match the coin as well (photo is dark, but you can see the same surface issues). On the other hand the JNDA cert photo minimizes the discoloration so perhaps it's progressing.
Great Britain 1879 Victoria Sovereign, London mint, VF25 with a mintage of 20,013. Suddenly people are beginning to realise their rarity and value. Heritage sold a VF30 for $4,935 and an AU55 for $15,600 in 2017.
Here's an interesting "Gothic Florin" I just picked up recently - for melt value. Not that great of condition, but its the only one I have of this type. I like the ones with die numbers. 1873 Florin - Die Number 184
I have one in transit, 1872 - die 64. It appears to be a bit of a problem coin with some harsh cleaning and odd toning. Hopefully when I have in hand it will be better than expected.
I bought this duit, which arrived yesterday, because it is so very odd looking. I suspect it is a "contemporary counterfeit". I have seen many coins with the Zeeland crest and none ever looked this comical. Also the numbers on the reverse are unique in my experience.
This one came today for my turtle collection. I couldn't find it in my Krause though I did find listings for similar coins with other animals.
I have a lot of world crowns in my collection, although this particular issue hadn't really been on my radar. Stumbled across the listing, put in a "what the heck" bid, and to my surprise won it. I'm sure it's been dipped, but otherwise the surfaces appear OK. These are the seller's pics. We'll see how she looks when I have it in hand.
I just posted this in it's own thread, but figured it really belonged here too. Someone has been pruning his collection and graciously allowed me to send him way too much money to take a few coins off his hands...for which I am grateful and the guy has a fabulous eye! Don't see toning like this on a Japanese coin too often, especially one of a somewhat more difficult variety (no border around the sunburst).
