Four major errors here...and some questions... This beauty is Broadstruck, which makes it cool by itself. It ia also struck on a Type 1 Blank (or would it really technically be Type 2 [rimeless] Blank? I guess that depends if a proof coin is just plated differently from regular stock, or if the strips of metal themselves - before they are punched out - are different from the start). What makes it especially cool is that is a Proof. (Notice the tumbling marks, particularly around the edges.) Finally, in addition to being a proof, even cooler is that the Mintmark is a "P" and not an "S." My question is, how/why would this proof specimen have a "P" Mintmark? Weren't all the SBA proofs minted in San Francisco? Does that mean that an obverse die somehow was placed inside the San Fran mint? Or was proof stock/finish placed in the Philly Mint? Would love to year from you guys on this.
The 1999 proof Sac dollars were struck in Philadelphia, 750,000 of them.. They were struck late in the year, too late to be included with the 1999 proof sets. It took four years before the mint was able to finally sell all of them.
If the grade is MS-63, ANACS is saying it's a business strike coin, even though it's struck on a blank that was prepared for minting proofs. That seems like a really unusual error. Cool find!
All 1999 proof dollars had the 'P' mintmark. There were none minted in San Fransisco as in previous years.
Do you think that maybe despite being a proof blank, that it was not struck with proof dies, but rather with the dies meant for circulated coins? Just trying to figure out your great question about why the MS-63 grade if it is a proof and not PR-63. Maybe a labeling error by ANACS?
I am going to resubmit it to PCGS. I am positive it is way nicer than a 63, and I think it will be my first try at a PCGS restoration as without the bright light, it looks like this...
Well, I guess this is why you don't make assumptions in this hobby. I didn't even think to check if they minted proofs anywhere but San Fran and West Point for modern coins
There were proof and business strike SBA dollars minted in Philadelphia in 99. I still need a 99 proof to complete my SBA set.
I appreciate that. What about resubmitting it. Especially for a new holder where you can see the rims?
You have a good point. It would probably look better in a PCGS holder. The grade may change up or down. I'll guess it would cost $50 or so. I don't know the value of these. They may just call it MS and not show Proof PL on the label. PCGS is not very wordy on the labels. I would chat with them at a major show and see how they would label it. Fun coin.
