Need help to stop collecting

My name is Treashunt and I am a coin addict.
I have not bought a coin in uh........5 days and I miss it.

It seems we al have some sort of a problem with coins. Peter can you start a section in coin talk called CA. i think we all need to take a little break from this addiction... i meant hobby of ours.

 

It is very easy to get hooked on anything. I got a bit carried away in '06 not really that bad but a little more than probably I should have. One has to strive for a balance in their lives. It take a conscious effort and lot of hard work to overcome addiciton reguardless of what it is, smoking, drinking, overeating ect. What works for one may not work for another. Recently I have been thinking about how much ...stuff... I have to put up with at work to buy this coin. It has been working real well lately. Course looking at some Ebay sales and the coin shows helps to.

 

I'll have to agree with coleguy. I'd find a different, maybe less expensive hobby for a while if I were you. I wouldnt make the decision to sell your coins just yet. Hang onto them for a while until you're sure. I made that mistake twice and had to start over. I have other hobbies on the side that I spend time with so I'm not too much into one thing, for example, I play guitar a bit, I collect autographs and I collect baseball memorabilia.

 

That's the best idea I've heard yet.

If you decide that $20 St. Gaudens in MS68+ is all you want to collect, I guarantee you'll limit your purchases severely.

 

oh i never sell my coins my definition of stop collecting was just limit my purchase to what the mint makes in 2008 i have tons of othe rhobiies unfortunately they are all completed liek stamps, books what not. i gues ill do some more reading.

Well, I see what you are meaning greg, except a true addiction of any sort is not heathly in the least bit. Whether it is drugs, cigarettes, coin collecting, cats, etc. I see what you are trying to say though. Myself, I am a coin addict. I am extremly compulsive in a sense, and I can get really addicted to things real easy. It is something I am working on as best I can. I think I have gotten better at it (even though my family tells me other wise ), lol. Spock, best advice I can give you man is like said earlier, maybe find someone to hold credot cards, debit cards, etc, if you can not resist the temptation. If it is that bad. But remember, it's not wrong to have a healthy hobby, but when it is the only thing you think, talk, and do and spend on and about, then that is when it gets wrong in most cases. Sure ! Any obsessive - compulsive behavior... gambling, overeating, relationships, and overspending.

Of course, it is OK to spend money on coins!!! In my own situation now, I really can't afford it and if I do spend any kind of money on coins - I've got a problem.

But if the wind were on my back and my buying coins isn't causing financial problems, then why not? Heck, I know people who go out and eat 3-4 times a week - at $30-$60 a pop. I don't do that. Do they have a problem? If I don't do that, can I use that money for coins?

And so on and so forth. Basically, if you got the money and it isn't hurting anyone, you shouldn't feel too guilty.

 

Are you sure? Try an experiment. Sell the 20% of your collection that you like least and see how much you can get for it. If it's less than you paid, that knowledge might slow you down a bit. If it's more, then you have the cash to buy more of what you like best. Personally, it's work that usually slows down my collecting. Over the past year things have been very busy for me and I've made few purchases.

There was a thread a while back about the value of selling for selling's sake. Selling is educational.

And if "I could never, never, never, ever part with even one of my coins...."... Hmmmmmmmmm....

 

I am always amazed when I see a post like this. Coin Talk has a free open forum to buy and sell coins right here. Why people never use it is beyond my understanding. To see the open forum just go to the bottom of the page and scroll to find the "open" heading. Then just click and you are there.
My opinion is that it would be a lot better [than an auction] to buy and sell right here from other members.
