I picked this up over the weekend at a local show. I liked the subtle color and the O/O variety. It's a VAM-3a. I thought I would do a Guess The Grade since I have not done one on a Morgan for a while. The lines on the reverse from the R of DOLLAR up through the eagle are planchet striation marks.
MS-64 Toned .. Maybe outside MS65 but think Check on Obv and Secondary Surface have to many Bag Marks to make 65.. Very Nice coin.
Let's round up the usual suspects. @heavycam.monstervam, @Paddy54, @Dave Waterstraat, @ddddd, @Lehigh96, @Beefer518
AU64. She's just missing too much detail for comfort. Weak branch mint, they probably gave her MS. If they did, I can even see her in 65, given the way they're grading, these days. Now I don't want to start a riot, but I think they're a little looser. Either way, another nice pickup. You have good taste in these, Justin.
I would agree with you on the AU look. But looking it over, it really has no actual luster breaks. Looking at other examples of this particular VAM, I think it has a lot to do with the planchet preparation and the dies that were used to strike them. Also this was grade before 1989. And thank you on the compliment.
He's referring to what's known as a "Super Slider" a coin that has very clean fields nice eye appeal but just the slightest trace of friction wear. It's a coin that might technically be an AU but was graded as an MS.
If graded that long ago ill say MS64. I cant say ive ever seen striations down in that area before. Strange
I didn't even notice them until I posted the image. LOL Then I looked it over and confirmed what they are.
