Now, granted you don't see these particular types every day, but they certainly aren't the historical figures or the denominations you expect to bring four-figures at auction! Lot 520: Gallienus antoninianus RIC 549; Göbl 1420 went for 3200 EUR: Lot 522: Salonina antonininianus went for 1300 EUR: Lot 534: Probus antoninianus went for 1900 EUR:
This one, same RIC, went for over 6000$ on Roma auction Feb this year..maybe it's a little bit rare....
I know that there’s a lot I don’t know but I wouldn’t have paid 1/10th of those prices for those coins.
The Probus is a rare type. Probus collectors can spend large amounts on scarce reverse types, scarce busts and scarce legends. Even busts that are common at one mint and scarce at another can make a coin go straight to 4 figures. An example of this would be the Imperial mantle with eagle type that is common at most mints but scarce at Lugdunum means that every example I have seen come on the market in recent years has been Eur 1000 +. Here is a double die match to the example above. http://probvs.net/probvs/R447/R447.html
