This is by far my biggest gamble on eBay so far!!! After reading the eBay Prices thread I kept my eyes pealed for what looks like a good deal today. This one is going to be real interesting! The toning on this half looks stunning from the photo's. I know toning is not everyones cup of tea - but that purple is something else.

Not much to go on but the photos and the sellers good feedback so I hope it works out.

    Tell me what you think.

    Thanks

    Darryl

BTW: My wife is so going to kill me :hammer: , I'm supposed to be buying her christmas gifts - not me. :eat:

Nice set...and '55 is the key date for the Franklins.

I am very anxious to see that up close! I would love to hear from those other experienced folks on the toning and what they think of it. Have you seen sets that tone like this and what do you think of it?\

Come on - lay it on me...:)

It looks great to me Darryl. The box looks like its in nice shape too. I had one of these at one time with the box but had to sell it. I would certainly buy it and give it to the wife, because you know she wont want it, so you'll get to keep it. This way it'll work out great for you and you'll only have to sleep on the couch for a week.

LOL - that would just get me in more trouble - she knows me well enough to see right through that. It would cost me real BIG!

Thanks - if it looks good on both sides I will be half tempted to get it slabbed. It would be the first to go to a TPG for me so I'm still tossing the around idea in my head. I think people will not be to quick to think I doctored it if it's slabbed. The values on eBay jump pretty high for nice slabbed toned coins. That would be the next delima.

Thanks - the price was just above 08 blue book. As out of date as those are, I figure I did good.

Would love to hear what the current grey sheet says.

It appears that someone has removed the original cellophane holders and replaced them with modern soft plastic holders. Not really uncommon, the old cellophane tended to get brittle and literally fall apart sometimes.

It doesn't change the coins or the box a bit. But it's no longer an original set. :(

I don't have any experience owning these box sets (although I have looked at a few at shows) so I missed this fact. In the end I guess it will not bother me if it appears that its the original set. The cent looks great and the quarter and half look like they sat that way for a very long time. All of the newer sets (57-63) I have bought - I have opened and put into air tites to protect them from me. At some point I would like to display a set of Franklin proofs in a nice frame. We'll see if that ever happens?

Nice set. Not into the toning here but that looks pretty cool.

The set looks nice. The toning on the Frankie looks good too. I am cautiously optimistic. But... Getting past using "eBay" and "gamble" in the same sentence (let's just say the odds are against it), I would be concerned about PVC flips being the replacement flip material as I have seen otherwise gorgeous mid to late 50's sets ruined by just that. Regardless, I hope the coins are gorgeous and (most of all!) you are happy with it when it arrives, and look forward to hearing more about it and/or seeing better pics of it! Good luck...Mike

The set looks ok to me---Proof Franklins are my pick!! I hope you like it!!
The packing looks just like the set I bought not long ago and like the packing that my dealer has right now.

While that may be true on UNC I would say that it is not the case on Proofs. I think the early 50's and the year 1958 are around the hardest to find a nice struck coin without problems.

    Great looking set !!!

I thought the 49-S was the key frankie?

    In a word, no.

There were no proofs during that time, IIRC.

p.s. no proofs from 1916-1935. Proofs resumed in 1936.

Thanks all, the sets go up into the three digits (which is a bigger investment for me when it comes to ungraded coins with so-so info) starting in 55. Wish I had better photos and a better description of the history. I think it will be okay - price is good (maybe) considering the normal eBay mark-up. I do like that purple :smile...

Will post good photos as soon as they arrive.
