Hey everyone thanks for the help in advance. So i came across this is my change today. I'm having trouble identifying what exactly i have here. I did some research, but i'm still unsure if this is toning or damage. and of course if it holds any premium past the silver content.
Looks like it was either plated or covered in something that has since mostly flaked off. That or it had something spilled on it that left those nasty splotches.
are those worn off black and gold layers peeling off ? https://www.merrickmint.com/black-r...obverse-reverse-2-sided-blackout-edition.html
Thank you for the replies. I was thinking that as well, it does look like some sort of chemical reaction. My photo is a little blurry but the coin is in decent shape under that mess. makes me think it was a failed cleaning. But on the other hand it looks like it took years to build up those layers, it looks almost natural.
looks like it was gold plated at 1 time and then probably under ground for awhile. wait for more opinions...
You could be right, i have seen sellers trying to scam people into buying gold plated Mercury Dimes and other gold plated coins.
