I've probably looked at over 10,000 Athens tetradrachms over the years, and I have no clue what missing earring she is referring to. Barry
Judging from her composite, the thing she quotes as missing is what hangs down below the neck, behind the ear so any coin tight at the bottom would be what she called 'missing earring'. Whether that is a huge drop earring is another matter. Most coins with this detail complete would be missing the top of the crest or be on an oversize flan like my humble fourree which has a lot of space at the bottom but plenty of other problems to keep it out of the million zone. Pity.
Ok, here's a question about Athenian Owls. I know there are drachms and tetradrachms and the infamous dekadrachm, I think there are obols but am unsure of other denominations. Also, which is the hardest to find and which is the most common. Inquiring minds want to know...
Ohhhhhh. That’s not an earring, at least no book I’ve ever read refers to it as an earring. That’s always called her hair that comes out from below the neck guard. The only earring is the round one on her ear which I couldn’t figure out how hers was complete and others weren’t. Her crest is far from complete. I’ve never known anyone to care about the hair below the neck guard. Barry
No one will buy that coin at such an insane price. We've all seen eBay listings in which the seller asks a million dollars (or some other clearly ridiculous price) with no goal other than to be funny or to draw attention to themselves or other listings, although I supposed deep in their hearts they might fantasize about some sucker actually paying that much. This owl tet listing seems to be something different. The seller seems to genuinely believe it is that valuable! How sad. I wonder what the seller's heirs will think when someday the (of course unsold) coin passes to them. Hopefully they will not perpetuate the myth.
Out of curiosity I looked at many coins which were graded much higher than her’s and I think what she is referring to is a more complete strike on the obverse of her coin which purportedly has the bulk, if not all, of the crest of the helmet and the full earring including the rounded/curved portion of the earring at the bottom......big deal.....and what about the reverse or the metal quality and....and.....and Will any serious collector pay such a ridiculous premium just for a more complete strike on the obverse???!!! And will they ignore all other factors like the reverse or overall condition of the coin or metal quality??!! Of course NOT But then I could have totally misunderstood what she’s trying to say....and it won’t be the first time a woman can accuse me of doing that
Sold for $2250 Sold for $1100 Sold for CHF 4500. This last one seems to have a superior crest and “earring.”
By looking at her coin and the others , she might be referring to the top part of the ear is missing . Hers is missing the top part of the ear the that comes down off of the top . I wonder if this is what she is referring to when she said missing earring ? I think it is, by looking at some of the others posted this may be what she says is missing amongst a few other bits and pieces. ??
