new Denarius (19mm, 3.14g, 7h). Rome, AD 209. Caracalla Laureate head r. R/ The Four Seasons as boys at play. RIC IV 153; RSC 59. Rare, toned, VF Four seasons coins are welcome
This is a rare denarius with reverse depicting the Four Seasons in the form of four boys at play; Spring holding a basket of flowers on his head, Summer with a scythe (sickle); Autumn holding a bunch of grapes, Winter wrapped in a mantle, holding a staff over his shoulder on which is a dead bird and a rabbit. This is one of only two examples I've seen (of course this means very little). It must have cost you at least one arm and one leg.
WOW!! What a cool reverse!! Congrats @ro1974 That's still on my 'wish list'....among so many others....l
Cool! Here's a coin of his mama's that depicts the four seasons! Julia Domna, issued under Septimius Severus Roman AR denarius; 3.24 gm, 19.8 mm Rome mint, AD 207 Obv: IVLIA AVGVSTA, bare-headed and draped bust, r. Rev: FECVNDITAS, Terra reclining l. under tree, left arm on basket of fruits, right hand set on globe, spangled with stars; in background, four children advancing r., representing the four seasons. Refs: RIC 549; BMCRE 21; Sear 6579
Those four seasons coins are outstanding, @ro1974's and @Roman Collector's all together Not even on my wish list but on my dream list Q
As long as we're recycling the thread, here's another Fecunditas for Domna in a somewhat different style reverse than the one RC posted last time. Still four seasons, but a lot more schematic:
