I didn't know that the SEM/EDS analysis could do such a large area as a 5 cent coin. I know it is very accurate on extremely small scale ( microns), but it seems that even if many points were read, it would not allow an overall % without more possible error on the whole coin. A large assumption on the alloy mix, whereas the 'gun' has a wider beam and gives a more accurate reading of the whole coin. I have used several SEMs , but not one with a EDS. As to a gun, I would expect to have as high accuracy as on gold and silver myself as a nickel or silver 5 cent coin. Jim
Brian, don't be upset at the forum. The more time you spend with these folks, who are representative of every single position on the matrix, from beginner to expert, and even many dealers, the more you'll learn. There have been times when I've posted something that I knew would draw debate, and I sort of braced for the coming storm. It's not usually like that, though. If you seem sincere, are honestly seeking advice/information, and you approach this forum with a modicum of respect, you'll find it's a great place to learn, and even to make some new friends. It won't take you long to figure out who the know-it-all, bullies are (there aren't very many), and thereafter you can ignore them. The majority of folks contributing here have a passion for this hobby and are quite happy to help others. I decided that when I first became a member, I'd watch much more than post. That way you can notice friendly, helpful members who go out of their way to assist, and send them a PM if you're worried about a post. Welcome. Rule 1: Take a deep breathe. If you give this forum a chance, you will benefit immensely. Jack
First of all, do you really mean to tell me you didn't notice my second post was 90% tounge in cheek? You didn't see that I said I don't like conspiracies, and in the next breath i give him a conspiracy. I was trying to show you guys that I didn't have all my ducks in a row, when I wrote the first post, and should have watched a few more times, before commenting. But your comment on me not helping anyone in my earth shatering career record, of 6 weeks on this site, really doumbfounded me. First, I had no idea that I could. second I wouldn't think my 6 weeks would grant me that kind of authority. And if I would have known, do you think I would be crazy enough to advise someone with you guys breathing down my neck? And "oh" I always think before spewing, and it was never my intent to call anyone a lier, but a little upity ya maybe.
Thanks Jack, I couldn't agree with you more on watching much more than posting. I really should have known that it is usaly a select few that act like a rookie cop on there first arest. I will settle down now and try to be quite and just listen. I think I have one guy picked out, but you never know maybe he was having a bad day or maybe I just Edited: Language him off. Thanks again Jack. Terry.
I will let you know when I get back from ngc. I know a little bit about coins and I know that this is clearly not a normal 1946 nickel and I have done a lot of research on this as well as shown it to just about every rare coin shop I could find and they all agree that it is not really a question of if it is something rare or a error it's just really what exactly it is and what is it worth and the guy to answer that is at ngc so I would be stupid to not drive two or three hours to find out. and do you really believe that rare coins can't be found in circulation? Where else do you think they would be? If they exist and were put into circulation and have not turned up they are probably sitting in a roll in a vault like the federal reserve.
