Picture yourself as a small time collector who has a few very nice coins. You have a special coin which you know is rare and would like to know the approximate value of it. Where do you go to find out how much it's worth. Take Care Ben
I would have voted for "Heritage" + "Greysheet" + "Teletrade" if such option were available. I even use E-bay completed listings if I'm planning on selling there, just to get a feel for what's happening. Plus I talk to folks at coin shows, with appropriate "bias filters" on. I get all the data I can, then make a SWAG (scientific wild-*** guess).
How about a Coin Forum such as Cointalk, Post a few pics and ask away.. Since I am the first to vote Everyone knows what my vote is.. LOL..
The question is---do we vote where they WILL go or where they SHOULD go? Most likely they will go some place like PCGS.com. They should take all of the above listed and get a price that fits in with those numbers. Speedy
I go by the Pcgs online price guide. It just gives me a general idea of what the coin is worth but I wont hold it to the exact dollar ammount.
I would post it on here, and get some opinions on it, and also take it to my local dealer to to get his opinion on it also. Between the two, I should get somewhat of an estimate on what I would make on the coin. Also, for most of my coins if they are circulated, I use www.numismedia.com to get a good figure, they seem pretty close. Basically all combined I should get a pretty decent estimate. Neat topic Bone, good for not only guests and new comers, but also for most everyone on here too. Phoenix

When I said Heritage and Teletrade, I'm talking about PAST AUCTIONS RESULTS, just like e-bay. The only "price guide" I ever use is Greysheet.
I would go to where I want to sell it. In my case, this would probably be E-Bay. If I didn't want to sell it, I would go to the place with the highest prices so I could feel good :0
I use the Greysheet. It is in my case monthly supplament prices I use when buying and selling. I find Heritage is a great resource for the slabbers, Ebay is ok, but there is so much weeding out of fuzzy pictures, overgraded material and NONDISCRIBED cleaned coins, and you have to watch out for the photoshoppers. PCGS values? What a joke, self promoting at best. Heritage again will also give you the "PCGS" value, and if you notice, it is few and far between when a PCGS slab gets a PCGS values price. EDIT: And sometimes, like last weekend on my 09 66RB, I ignore all rhyme and reason and just decide how much I want something. Same goes when I list my monster Lincolns and Morgans in my store, I put the price I am willing to take, not necceserily what any guide says, if it sells, good, if not, well I just have more monsters then.
If I want a real fast Idea I go to e-coinprices and subtract about 20%. If i'm looking to sell I go to heritage then go to ebay and try and find comparable completed listings. Between the two I can get a decent ballpark figure. Somedays the ballpark is bigger than others though. In the end though I think you have to hope a potential buyer is using the same sources as you are. In a perfect world my buyers would use the PCGS price guide.
Most small time collectors would go to their local dealer's shop, but that wasn't an option. Given your choices, you are assuming that the collector would use the internet. And if he did that, he'd likely end up at the PCGS site. For if you type coin prices or coin values into a search engine - the PCGS site is always right at the top. When you type coin values into a search engine, Heritage is right under PCGS. So he might end up there. When searching using coin prices - Heritage is not even on the first page. Few would look past the first page.
What I don't understand is why I never get anyone calling me saying "the PCGS price guide says that such and such a coin is worth xxx do you have one available for that price?", but I routinely get people calling me trying to sell their garbage (modern high grade dis-reputable slabs) who get upset when I won't pay anywhere near PCGS price guide values. This is a constant frustration! by the way, to answer the poll I use the auction results of the major houses, the sheets (grey, blue, trends, numismedia), CCE, and recently sold coins, but if you have one rare coin ($5000-$10,000 or more) then auction results are the most useful single thing. One thing people forget is that published auction results always include the BP, so the owner of a coin needs to subtract 15-20% when figuring how much they could sell it for (or how much they can expect to realize if they choose to auction it).
