I think some people are confused because the 2 in the large date looks smaller and the 2 in the small date looks larger. For the 1960 small and large date, the size is different, but in the 1982 that's just what they call the variety. I don't believe the 1982 date is actually smaller than the large date.
I always thought that the small date letters were "thinner" and the large date letters were "thicker" for all of the lettering on the coin. That's a "relative" diagnostic and not very helpful I think.
I always thought it was because the top of the 8 is smaller on the small date vs the large date hence why that's all I was looking at.
I have like 40 lbs of pennies that I've collected since the late 60s, excluding a couple containers I have full of them too. Unfortunately I'm not a penny/cent person to really have the fervor to actually look at them Though I am now looking at a few when I separate my pennies into decade jars. I'm also looking at the older nickels sometimes.
Hello: I'm new here but have already enjoyed some of the posts I've scanned. I was wondering if some of you out there could help me by offering your opinion on my attached pic of a 1982 D penny. I've watched all the videos, and 50% of my says it's a small date, the other 50 says large. Help! And thanks. Joe
Can we get a better resolution image of the date? My instinct says that's a large date based on the shape of the 2.
