Britain began establishing trading posts on the West African coast in the 18th century. By the early 20th century The Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast, British Togoland, Nigeria, and the British Cameroons had all been established as British colonies. The Gold Coast and British Togoland, which had been administered together, became the independent country of Ghana in 1957. Nigeria became independent in 1960. In 1961 the northern part of the British Cameroons became part of Nigeria, and the southern part joined the newly independent country of Cameroon, which formerly had been administered by France as the French Cameroons. Sierra Leone became an independent country in 1961, The Gambia in 1965.

It's always nice to see someone collecting West Africa. This is truly a forgotten part of the world - and I'm not just talking about coin collecting.... I spent 22 years in West Africa and absolutely love it. The people, the culture, etc. I think you get. it. My wife is also from West Africa. I would just like to publicly say that if you want general information on West Africa or the money, please PM me. I'm not sure I can help you, but you've got nothing to lose. Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of CFA currency. I can say that a close relation of my wife is high up in the Central Bank for West Africa (currency of West Africa (CFA)). He has been promoted and promoted again. Now, I'm not talking about getting free money, but if there were questions, I think we could get really "high level" answers from this guy. No kidding. I think we "did" New Year's Eve with this guy and his family for at least 10 years. So I guess that's what I could add to this excellent CoinTalk Forum. (It's not what you know - it's who you know....)
wow Pocket change... that will be an excellent resource that we shall not forget!!! now... about West African coin and currency ...
It's late right now, but I will start a West Africa Currency thread tomorrow. If you're chomping on the bit, the RAREST West African bill in recent years is the 2500 CFA bill. I was there and it came out for about two years or so. People didn't like it at all and it was pulled after about two years. They were DESTROYED. So you should know they are no longer legal tender. The face value for this bill is about $4. It sells for much more on e-bay. (ok - a LOT more) When we were still in West Africa, my wife ran a bar. I told her that if she ever got a 2500 CFA note, to let me know. NOTHING!!!! In fact, I do not own this 2500 note. Of course, we still have some contacts back in Africa and all is not lost (!!!!)
PC I honestly dont know what to say that is such a kind and also very nice offer, unfortunatly my interests dont extend beyond the colonial period, can I ask if you collect coins from this region? I ask as I quite often buy large amounts of world coins and sort them so can allways put aside any country that you might need :thumb: just let me know :smile

Hi welcome to CoinTalk, can I ask if you have a picture or scan of it? if so that would give me some idea of what grade it is.
