A rather interesting typo variety where the date 1726 was set as 1276. Misplacement of letters is common on early coins from many regions due to poor literacy. Misplacement of numbers is seen far less often. Bitkin catalogs this variety as R2 (10-19 pieces), though I suspect that number is conservative. This example has smooth surfaces and remnants of red luster in some of the protected areas. The majority of others I've looked up have corrosion and/or porosity issues.

I love it, it seems like Russian coins from the 19th century and before always have that nice "medieval" look. Any idea why its 1276 instead of 1726? I'm not that big on Russian currency.

Maybe it is Mule (coin with mistake)?

It's a mistake by someone involved in the die making process, one that was overlooked :)

Actually I believe 10-19 pieces is about right - in THAT condition.

    WOW.

There is one time I have seen a 1081 2 kopek (1801). That went for some serious money...

Never heard of that one before, sounds like a very interesting piece to see. I don't think Bitkin even lists a 1081 variety.
