Shield nickel Counterfeit or Error ?

    If that date is 1809, which it appears to be, it’s fake. Shield nickels were minted from 1866 through 1883.

    Looks like an altered 1869 nickel. The image makes it look like a counterfeit.

    I think some late posters may have missed a point I was making. Obviously the coin is genuine with an altered date. The image of a beat-up and very worn nickel makes this genuine coin look counterfeit.

    I wouldn't say 'altered digit' necessarily;
    looking at the wear pattern, and marks,
    it's just a coincidence that one 'hit' is
    on the '6'.

    Even if hit during circulation, that makes it "altered"
