If that date is 1809, which it appears to be, it’s fake. Shield nickels were minted from 1866 through 1883.
I think some late posters may have missed a point I was making. Obviously the coin is genuine with an altered date. The image of a beat-up and very worn nickel makes this genuine coin look counterfeit.
I wouldn't say 'altered digit' necessarily; looking at the wear pattern, and marks, it's just a coincidence that one 'hit' is on the '6'.
