xxx Edited to remove self promo xxx I am interested in opinions of whether collectors prefer to buy from an ebay dealer or from a website. And as a collector buying from the website , what features do you prefer ? thanks Randolph ANA R211752
I like ebay. I have a few dealers that I've dealt with via websites and they've done well. So, I stick with them when I'm in a rush for something.
xxx Edited to remove self promo xxx Ebay is a good way to build a customer base. The downside is that eBay has a reputation for also hosting a number of fraudulent sellers - especially in coins. If you're fair and honest, you should be able to rise above that and do well. Obviously, one of the greatest advantages of selling from a website is not paying eBay's fees (which can add up quickly). I think it would be more difficult to build your customer base starting that way, however. JMHO
=== I prefer both I balance out the item the terms and of course how many coins, sheckel, dinero, etc it is going to cost me.
Most of my major purchases are using website vendors. I find that Ebay vendors are too controled by rules. I can't even seem to get mutiple daily "buy it now" purchases discounted. That does not happen with most website vendors, they either appreciate the larger orders or aren't as constricted and they probably have a little larger margin to work with.
attagirl Susanlynn I see when you got your first atta girl so let me be the first to award you the: ABCD Award That is for going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty to help so many of us out Richard
Hi BC, I think that there are pro's and cons with each of those choices........I prefer to buy most of my coins from friends!! You can never go wrong there!
i'm new to CW, but i also collect and play violin. There are e-bay huksters a plenty in that business too. i think it's the difference between a flea market and an actual store. Mind you, i'll gladdly shop an on-line store. But i prefer to reward somebody that attempts to go the extra mile for actually setting up shop. IMHO there's too many ways that e-bay depends on collective honesty and too many bad apples. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch, but a bad peanut can put you off peanuts forever. i don't dip when i dance and i don't do e-bay.
I have found some excellent dealers thru ebay purchases, after the initial purchase then I use their website.
I prefer ebay, but YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. There are a lot of "bad guys" on ebay, but if you are knowledged in what you are buying, you should be able to avoid any major pitfalls. The biggest advantage is winning an auction for one bid increnent higher than the last. The is alot of junk on ebay so it is easy to dismiss it all together, however, there are also collectors who won't settle for dealers offers, so they try to get more for their coins off ebay. Search around and you can find some good deals.
Thank you for such a nice compliment, Richard. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, I still have a ways to go to contribute as much as many of the members here.
Tough to answer that question. I have to go with GD and say I buy where there is something I want. My first preference is a coin show, next is a coin store. Online buying is third and I really haven't differentiated in my mind between Ebay and website purchases. Many Ebay coin dealers also have websites for buying coins and an Ebay purchase can lead to purchases from the sellers website. And that can go the other way, too. I guess the only difference is the feedback on Ebay. That gives me a better insight into the dealer. I'm pretty careful to look for feedback involving returns and the feedback for the people who left the feedback. I put all that into an equation and decide if I want to bid or not. When I have a good experience with an Ebay dealer, I add them to my 'Favorites' list and check back once in a while. The best feature of any coin website are good photos.
