I was perusing upcoming auctions today, and saw a 1812 French 5 Franc (Napoleon) with an unusual stamp. I know this is the most common Napoleonic coin (lots and lots were minted) but I've never seen one with a stamp like this (owl and bar on the eye). The auction has a starting bid of $800 which seems ridiculous. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?
Apparently it is a countermark of a lion's head, applied during the hundred days. The message translates to "Napoleon the Lion, now caged." https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/...0023/lot-100d66ce-8bf1-4753-80d7-a47b00f3b317
