So, is it possible that a coin would exhibit both the shelf like appearance of a MD doubling as well as the appearance of true like hub doubled dies? Like I totally see the shelf like appearance of this 1958 especially on the letter E on the reverse in the word one but, I also see what looks like extra thickness on like the E PL UNU in the motto as well as the UNI in United, the TES of states, the OF and finally on the ERICA (I think, kinda having a hard time remembering and it's too late to keep checking) and on the obverse I see thickness on the LIB, the 19 and a little on the 5 and of course the repunched MM. (Edited to add that I also see thickness on the right wheat) I'm not saying that this is a hub DD but it is just a good example of what I believe is so damn confusing to me And perhaps maybe to others too... Course it could just be me though lol. Rachel
On the reverse it appears to be DDD ( die deterioration doubling) IMO based on the photos also it is possible to have DD and MD on the same coin from my understanding. JMHO Dave
I asked the same question a while back and it is possible to have both on a coin. I have a 74 Ike with MD yet also is a DDO. IMHO it seems like as soon as some notice the MD when looking over a coin, they automatically or instinctively come to their conclusion without looking at the other "clues". Not all, just some giving conflicting results.
Yes, you can have both. A true doubled die is hubbed onto the die, so each coin made from this die would have the doubling. MD is created when the coin is struck and the die slides, bounces, or such. So, a coin created from a doubled die can also have MD from the striking process. If this same doubled die deteriorates from use over time, then it can also show DDD (die deterioration doubling). A coin could possibly have all three. Good luck trying to show that to someone!
There is always a chance that a Doubled Die can have MD. I would guess it is more likely than not. These coins to me even though they could be a Doubled die,Are not in there true form. I would not pay a premium for them unless they were highly sought after.
