This coin has beautiful luster, just can't capture the true beauty. Error or variety I'm not sure about this one. Would love to hear what you guys have to say
Sure looks like a Black Beauty to me and it would be an "Error". Specifically a sintered planchet. Some prefer "Improper Alloy Mix" or "Improperly Annealed".
1958 nickels seem to be very prone to go black. I have a really black 1965 dime too. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Most are dated 1959, and are still being found in old original rolls..... 1958 is the next most common date, and there are a few examples of earlier years thru most of the '50's. And as mentioned above, they're known as 'sintered planchets', or 'improperly annealed planchets'.
I can't believe how many errors there are in labeling. And ANACS is supposed to be the specialist among the TPGs for attributing errors and varieties. How do we know when they are wrong ASAP but they're the experts?
Well, learned something new today. Thanks for sharing this knowledge! I had not known this was an error for these. I HAD one in an album, that I thought as just from environmental damage. I guess I should read up more!
@dchjr here is an old thread of mine https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1959-5c-improperly-annealed-black-beauty-and-4-others.268274/
