I got the coin in some change at work....yu can feel the raised edges where the smoother metal begins like part of the final stamp didn't "stick" and there are like "drops" of the smoother metal on the figure head....doesn't look like someone altered it by sanding or rubbing the coating off because all of the lettering is intact....the picture isn't the greatest because my cam sux

    ritalynn,

    Welcome to the Coin Talk!

It looks like the coin is missing part of the Cladding, sometimes called a Partial Missing Clad Error! Does the missing portion around Washington's bust appear to be Copper or Copper colored? If so, the coin would be a nice Error Coin find and very collectible to folks that collector these type of errors. I really can;t tell from the picture due to the reflections.

I copied the picture to my PC, edited and cropped to create two pictures and have included them below which may help somewhat in the analysis of the coin. However, if you could provide additional close-ups of the coin without so much reflection, would really help!

    Welcome to the forum!
And as for the coin all that I can say is: ???????????

Mike Diamond may be along in a bit to help us out.
Or post this to the error section so that he will see it.

Weird. Not a greased die, because there would be little detail in that area, maybe a planchet error? I look forward to seeing what mike diamond has to say on it.

Looks like a layer of glue.

That's what I thought as well. Try soaking in either acetone or water. If it is glue one or the other will most likely take it off.

Just asking a question, but if it was a layer of glue, wouldn't the glue sort of cover up the part that it is on, and be outward? Might be wrong, and probably am, but I think it might possibly still be some sort of error. JMO. But I am not an expert, by any means.

well...after reading the comment about the glue i decided to compare this quarter to a "normal" quarter...and i noticed the part where Washington's head is was unusually smooth...so i took out a thumb tack and started pickin around the edges...seems like it was glue or something of the sort....I'm not a coin collector so I don't know how to look for things like that...i got myself all excited for nothing...kinda ticks me off...well more like disappoints me...but I'll get over it:headbang::mad:
