This sure looks like a RPM, but cannot find it listed. Is this die deteriorating on the mark? Thanks...
I assume you're talking about what appears to be a darkened area of similar shape to the south? I suppose it's possible, but the one photo is insufficient to say either way.
A quick look doesn't show anything like it on variety vista. You may want to look the site in a little more detail. http://www.varietyvista.com/02a LC RPMs Vol 1/Repunched Mintmarks.htm
Thank you... I did check it against the 1MM-007, but it only lists the early die states so, I will throw it into the maybe pile for now. Thanks for your responses...
One suggestion, soak in acetone to clean the organics off as stated above, on occasion, there is more clues under the dirt. Rotate the coin under your magnification, if the rpm stays, it is probably good, if not it is a product of lighting and damage. Sometimes, rotating the coin makes the image of the rpm stronger.
Thank you Nolan Workman for the advice. I did clean some of the junk with acetone and did look at the MM at different angles. I guess not, kinda looks normal. Thank you again...
The camera perspective used on both of the OP's images does skew the coin design. Both are taken from strong angles. But overlays indicate the mintmark on the OP's coin to be located slightly north and west of 1MM-007 (Changed RPM-007 to 1MM-007). Sorry for the mislabeling - that is RPM-012 - 1MM-007. Can't change the labeling on the images posted Replaced old images with new images View attachment 764688 View attachment 764689 View attachment 764690
Thank you justafarmer. I was only focused on the line below the MM, so I moved the coin to get the best light on that. This morning though, I took a straight on image of the D and found your overlay of the RPM-012 fits. I MUST remember to take a full straight on image of the obverse and reverse and THEN highlight what I see. Still learning...
Even with the straight on image - I still find the mintmark location of your coin to be slightly north and west of RPM-012. But I could have 1955 D RPM-012 mapped incorrectly. I did the mapping of the variety this morning for this thread and haven't verified it.
