I now have three ancients that are magnetic. A Fals of the Sultans of Malwa(not really ancient but very old), A smallish RPC from Pautalia(Faustina II) and now this one from Syracuse: King of Syracuse: Hieron II Sicily, Syracuse Mint 275-215 BC Obverse: Diademed head of Poseidon left Reverse: Ornamental trident-head, between two dolphins, dividing IEP - WNOS in lower field References: Calciati II, 370: 196, SNG Cop 854 Size: 20mm, 7.01g It was a bargain bin coin for six dollars and in very bad shape but I could not bypass a Poseidon with a red eye! Unless that is part of a doctored patina that is crazy. I am known to purchase a coin for a crazy reason and this is an example. Post a coin you obtained for a divergent reason or aspect. Like it speaks to you somehow but only a coin nerd would really understand.
When this Akragas eagle tore open his rabbit supper, bloody red patina splattered all over his green tummy. This Commodus of Dionysopolis shows Herakles next to a floating bow which is shaped like a retrograde B which is conveniently the mark for the two assaria denomination. I believe the king nerd coins are the Constantine/Licinius family coins with eros in Greek in the mintmark. We recently had a thread on them by nicholasz219 for those not aware of the matter: That CNG does not accept this amazes me. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=356499
Well, if we are letting our nerd flags fly; my wife is a huge birder. And she LOVES parrots. When I 1st saw this I did a double take. Due to the sandy patina the "Eagle" has what appears to be a hook bill. Making it appear to be a parrot. I bought it for this very reason and she loved it PHRYGIA, Apameia. Circa 100-50 BCE. Æ 22mm (6.53 g, 12h). Antiphon, son of Menekleos, magistrate. Helmeted bust of Athena right / Eagle flying slightly right; stars around; below, maeander pattern with piloi of the Dioskouroi to left and right; in exergue, two lines. SNG Copenhagen 164. VF, sandy brown patina
Cool find! I got this one because of the spiral design of the shield.Something I, nor other FH collectors had seen before. Then I found another one lol.
