Hi all, my first post. It's not "old" per se, but it is "older" than 1981 (now 37 years old). It's a beautiful nickel, out of a proof frosted set I acquired around or about the same year from my cousin, when we were trading coins.
a hole filler 1956 toned quarter. I see the scratches. it was cheap and just a filler until I find a high grade 1. sellers pics...
Can someone please tell me what a "toned" coin is, and how it arrives at that grade? It's not actually a grade, is it?
Toned just means the coin is tarnished to some extent giving it a color other than that of the bare metal which some people might find attractive. For example, most large cents such as US, Canada and Great Britain normally acquire a chocolate brown color with age and normal handling. Most silver coins will get some black tarnish with age. Toning is a beauty which is subjective and is in the eye of the numismatist.
