Very nice Seated halves! VF20 and XF40 - however the scratch on the obv of the 78CC could prevent a straight grade.
The 71 looks like it has had the fields smoothed. The lighter area in the field between Liberty's knee and the stars looks suspiciously like tool marks to me.
Thank you all for your input. I will post the grades soon. In the meantime, just a comment/question from my part: I always thought that F12 or better required a full 'Liberty'. This is not the case on the '71, so that would put it (to me) at VG10 at best. Is this correct?
The weak "Liberty" might bother some, and discount the value a little, but overall the detail looks to be VF.
Once again, thanks to all for your comments and opinions. Both coins graded straight at NGC: the '71 cc at F12, the 78 CC as EF45. Most of you got the '78 Cc spot on. However, most also overgraded the 71 CC. That is interesting. The short scratch by the eagle's neck on the '78 was not enough (per NGC) to warrant a details grade. I always thought the '71 slightly overgraded at F12, but as C-B-D mentioned, a full 'Liberty" is not necessarily a prerequisite for F12. I have learnt something. Thanks!
71 seems undergraded. VF-20 I think, and the other one everyone was spot on. I may be at XF-40, but I am tight.
It appears the obv of the 71CC has slightly more wear than the rev. You posted the reverse picture first, which may have influenced some of us. Looking at the pictures again, F12 is reasonable. I also believe the 78CC got a bump to XF45 because of its rarity and a more common date coin in the same condition may not have graded as high. I expected a net grade of XF40 due to the scratch...
