To me the coin looks like a shot of the earth from space with strange writing around it. Ancient aliens anyone!? (Queue the pic of the nerd with the wild hair).
Seriously though, it came in a grip with early Roman coins...but that doesn't look Latin to me. Unless it's Greek, making it provincial.
Earth to CT. Can anyone help me ID this coin?

Looks Imperial Provincial to me. I can see a pretty clear sigma.

    Well, maybe not Imperial.

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

The first thing I though was @TIF's Germanicus and Drusus coin...

Well, that's just exciting (even in its nearly unidentifiable condition). I looked up her old (non-dry) post. It was very fascinating. And I hope you're right. The coin sure looks to have the peculiar "over-strike" she has written about... Hopefully she will share her expert (not an expert) opinion:) here is a link to her post. It's a great read!

I have always admired TIF's pair of these. Mine is terrible but now I see it is not the most worn one. This is a very rare thing and the only example of a countermark made to replace the entire original legends.

Wow! I was just about to tag you, as yours is in her post. Yours looks great...especially next to mine.
So do you believe that to be the one I posted?

Without doubt. Rotate your obverse 3/8 turn counterclockwise.

Cool!! If you've ever seen the type, it is instantly recognizable. Your coin would be recognizable even if none of the ring die legend remained :).

IMHO this coin does not come in 'cull'. TIF can point out she has better ones but coins grading fine or better belong in Triton level sales and not the usual 'also ran' auctions.
