I just won this ebay auction of a 1937 P Buffalo nickel. The seller has some very nice pictures, what grade would you guys give it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uncirculat...2moxgvsxghxQ%2FraiK48%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc What do you guys think? I appreciate all opinions.
I can't tell if it's just the lighting, but i think i see some green on it. Get it in some acetone when you can.
There seems to be an abundance of marks and some hair lining. At best the coin is AU, at worst it is cleaned. This seller is very controversial.
Thanks for the reply. You seem to know about this seller, can you tell me why this seller is very controversial?
Lol, I have no idea why I thought it was, the photo doesn't even have their logo. Must have had a brain fart. I think I saw an ad for another coin that was GSC at the top of the page and projected. My bad, sorry about that. To the OP, please ignore the link I posted above as it is about a completely different seller. I have bought coins from Vette1986 before with mixed results.
Thanks for the link anyway, i read the posts and it's useful for me as i was also planning to bid on a GSC coin. You said you have mixed results, can you elaborate a little? Are the pictures accurate to the real coins?
I agree with details cleaned. In the past, I've purchased coins raw from this seller. One graded properly, the other came back Details cleaned. From the pictures in the auction, I believe I see the telltale signs of a light cleaning.
I wouldn't even pay $1. This is a common coin. Lighting makes it difficult. It might be AU. High retail book value does say $9, but I believe these can be had in this condition for $2 at any coin show/ shop.
It has been almost a decade but IIRC, some photos represented the coin well, other photos hid problems.
Yes. This. Do not “nonchalant” looking at a GSC photograph. Look at it like you’re trying to find Waldo. Waldo is a coin’s problem, and he COULD be hiding ANYWHERE. Be especially noteful of rims.
As stated, looks cleaned to me. All those nicks/bumps/dings, and yet it's close to blast white? Nope. I'm not a fan of the seller, even though I've never bought any of his stuff, but I just don't get warm-fuzzies from his listings. As for GSC, I have bought from them, and I'm actually glad I did. It was a graded (PCGS) coin, which is the only thing I would ever buy from them. The reason I'm glad I bought from them, is the entertainment I get every night. They send me an email with their "under-valued" listings. I then watch and laugh at how much people are paying for their dreck.
Looking at the tip of the tail it is not there. By traditional standards that I learned from Brown and Dunn that would make it no more than very fine. Standards have loosened over the years regarding the horn. It used to take full horn to reach a possible fine. Guessing the one grade bump would convert approximately I would peg this as XF. Surface does not look natural so likely cleaned, dipped or acetoned. 1937 is extremely common. Unless it is some variety it is not worth much.
It's certainly not Uncirculated like it is advertised. I've bought one coin from this seller and promptly returned it. I don't trust them any more. Simple as that.
OF COURSE it's not uncirculated, but which are you going to believe - his hype language or your lying eyes? It's a plain solid AU, period, except for the fact that it's been cleaned. Harley's being a bit harsh here. Who goes by Brown and Dunn any more? And where do you keep it? In your Studebaker?
