Hey, guys and gals. I recently got into coin collecting and error coin hunting and have been lurking this forum for a few months. You seem like a nice enough bunch. Anyway, I recently got a microscope to have a better look at some coins I thought could possibly be error coins and am having some issues identifying if this 1970 S penny has DD on obverse or if it's MD. Doubling on "1970 S" tail end of "trust" and that's about all I can find. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Your coin is not a doubled die. The doubling you see is either MD or DDD. I can't tell for certain which it is. It could go either way. The doubling is flat and shelf-like, which is a primary indication or MD. But, I don't see any reduction in the size of the numerals, which would indicate DDD, nor are there any flow lines. It could go either way, but it's not a doubled die. Also, that coin is beat and needs to be put out of its misery. Congratulations on your first post. EDIT: after a more thorough look, it is definitely MD. All the signs are there.
See how the MM is doubled in the same direction and looks like all the other doubling on your coin? That would make it MD. All mint marks were hand punched into the die, and thus the MM would not be doubled, in the same direction.
