Here's three new ones that came today. I'm happy about all three of them. First is 1907 Danish West Indies 20 cents. Then 1922 Greenland 10 kroner. And finally British Virgin Islands 25 dollars with panda.
A new one to add to my 16th to 19th century German collection. Sorry about the lighting not being perfect.
Hamburg 1904 5 Mark 326,000 struck 27.7770 grams 0.900 fine 0.8038 oz I like the Free City and Hanseatic League concepts. I am not much for the Deutsches Reich, but it was ok as a customs union (Zollverein). Between 1648 and 1914, Gemania was a thriving area for intellectual and scientific advances specifically because it was united by a common language, but not under a common ruler. I saw PaddyB's Freistadt Frankfurt above. Nice coin. I need one now. I believe that the damage at the top of mine here came from using the coin to prop something heavy like a machine. (No damage opposite that.)
Nice little coin. The colony was sold to the USA in 1917 for several reasons. With the abolition of slavery in 1848, DWI stopped being economically viable and as a crown colony required support from the national treasury. Population declined. The USA wanted the islands to firm up defenses against German submarines (immediately) and to further secure US domination in the Caribbean along with the Canal Zone and Puerto Rico.
Since the new year I`ve purchased 3 collections, 2 of which were stored in suitcases and I`ve found quite a few coins in house clearances during my job as an antique dealer. Here are just a few of the thousands this year. Sorry about the pics, poor artificial light.
This arrived today, NGC MS64. Nothing rare or unusual about it, but it seems any self-respecting world coin collection should include a silver Mark from the Empire, and I didn't have one. Seller's pics (looks much nicer in hand):
