Your First Red Book...

Do you remember your first Red Book purchase? I remember mine distinctly. It was a trip to my local library to look for coin books. They had a 1964 Red Book ( in 1966 ) which I checked out. When I got it home I noticed there were only two previous loans recorded on the card. I went back and mentioned this to the librarian and she said she never really did well with these types of books. I asked if the library would sell it to me. Got it for 50 cents. Still have it. I was only 12 at the time. Anyone like to weigh in on their first copy of this and how old they were when they got it?

My first was purchased in 2013. Before that, I just used to call Ed Wood. Now that he's not as easy to reach, I had to rely on the Red Book for a lot of my information.

I'm referring to our (CT) Ed Wood. What's Plan 9? Was that one of his "ideas"?

Mu first redbook i believe was the 2015 edition, the year after i started collecting. My oldest redbook is from 2010, a retired library book in which i got for 25 cents. I think they upgraded to 2016/7 version.

Not sure. I think I bought one around 2008. I've never collected US coins so it was not so important to me. I did win an EBay auction one time for a set of about 30 of them with the oldest being one from the late '50s. I still have a few of those but sold most of them individually for a small profit.

My grandmother had an old copy years ago but I have no idea what issue it was. I just picked up MY first copy about a month ago, a 2018 Edition and I'm still working my way through it. I'm literally reading it, all the coin descriptions and everything. I don't expect to retain it all but some of it will stick and give me an idea of what's in the book and what's out there to collect that I've yet to be exposed to. For example, I'm starting to gain interest in Commemoratives because of reading that section.

The real Ed Wood made a lot of campy movies in the 50's and has sort of a cult following. Plan 9 from Outer Space was one of his movies. There was a movie made about him a few years ago. The CT Ed Wood troll used his pic (not sure if it was the real one or movie one) for an avatar

BTW, I was in two different Ollie's the other day and they both had a whole load of 2017 spiral bound editions on sale for next to nothing. Something like $3. If there is an Ollie's near you then you may want to look into it if you do not have a current one.

My first Red Book was my Uncle's used 1965 edition. He gave it to me to me when I was about 6 or 7 and I still have it. I got some newer ones as Christmas/Birthday gifts as a kid (The 1974 had a terrible binding and the pages kept falling out). The first one I think I actually purchased myself was the 1980 edition.

I don't remember my first. I have 29 now with my oldest being a 1958. Was trying to slowly work on a complete set but it fell by the way a while back.

Not really sure but I purchased my first Red Book sometime in the mid 1960’s. Still have it along with the rest of the issues.
