1831 Quarter Eagle Struck on a Dime

Saw this while scrolling through Heritage's past coin auctions. Thought I'd share this with everyone. I'd say it's a pretty significant error, considering how many capped bust gold pieces were minted.

How could it have gotten all the circulation to be in that condition?

 

Remarkably cool error. I wonder if when it circulated if people recognized it as a dime or as a quarter eagle? I’d be inclined to think it was viewed as a dime since it obviously wasn’t made of gold.

 

That’s amazing it circulated that much. I bet everyone thought it was just another dime

Comparison pics to an actual 1831 Capped Bust dime and an 1833 $2.5 below.

 

It probably circulated as a dime for 50+ years until it was discovered.
And then it has been sitting in someones collection hidden away for 100 years.
