Octochalque or Hexachalque of the Ptolemaic Kingdom for PTOLEMEE IV PHILOPATOR (221-205 av JC), for 68,50g et 40mm
I have only two Ptolemaeic coins, both xxxobols like yours. These are exquisite works of ancient Greek art, and as such extremely affordable.
As it with all other coins I like, the prices have been going up rather sharply lately, or so it seems. I have many but am lacking in Ptolemaic bronzes struck outside of Alexandria. Ranging in size from 48 mm (91.8 gm) to 14 mm (1.7 gm):
Lovely coins, @Rayban35 and @TIF ! I don't have many Ptolemaic coins, being a ... well ... Roman collector and all, but I do have this one: Ptolemy V Epiphanes, 205 BC-180 BC AE hemidrachm, 18.84 g; 28.4 mm Alexandria, ca. 197-183/2 BC Obv: Corn-wreathed head of Isis, right Rev: ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, eagle standing on winged thunderbolt, left Refs: Svoronos 1235; Sear Greek 7880; BMCG 6.94,72; SNG VIII (Hart) 1175; Forrer 80.
Great Bronze @Rayban35 ... big and beutiful. Well done. I have a few Ptolemy IV's: Egypt Ptolemy IV 221-205 BC AE Tet 40mm 7.2mm thick 69.5g Zeus Ammon Eagle Egypt Ptolemy IV 221-205 BC AE 37mm 42g Drachm Zeus-Ammon Eagle Tbolt SV 974 O-R Egypt Ptolemy IV 221-205 BC AE 33mm 35g HemiDrachm Zeus-Ammon Eagle Tbolt
Great coins all. I have yet to score some of these giant drachms of Alexandria but am itching to do so. But they are not cheap anymore I am finding.
Sorry, Rayban35, this time you haven't hit the jackpot. You say the last and final ruler was the seventh. But Cleopatra was the seventh !!! She was certainly the final queen, although here influence may have outlived her. The Battle of Actium, lost by Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, meant that the Ptolemy's no longer ruled Egypt, but Egypt was now part of, and ruled by, the Roman Empire. Unless you know differently, which Egyptian ruler was to take over, after Cleopatra's demise ?
The question was, "Wasn't Cleopatra the last Ptolemaic ruler in Egypt ?". And the answer is, Cleopatra VII. But you are now asking, "which Egyptian ruler was to take over, after Cleopatra's demise ?" Which is a flawed question due to the implicating that Cleo7 was Egyptian. As we all know, the Ptolemies were Greek (Macedonian if you want to get technical. As many didn't consider them Greek until Alexander III's pop, Philip II, showed up). Augustus, now in charge, was just as "Egyptian" as Cleopatra VII. Cleopatra VII AE10 (quarter obol), Paphos Mint, Cyprus, struck. c. 38-30 BC, Draped and diademed bust of Cleopatra VII right. / Greek legend, "Ptolemy, King" Double cornucopia. Svoronos 1160
Sorry, I'm sorry I thought you meant the currency of "Roman Collector", but of course you are right it is the Cléopâtre VIIqui the last free of Egypt, as ruler following the death of the Queen and Marc Antoine it becomes a Roman province, excuse me again with these translators is not always reliable.
Hi Ryro. I was casting a wide net, re. "Egyptian" rulers. I meant, really, non-Roman and included the Ptolemies, as "Egyptian" even though their backgrounds, as you say, were Greek. I am still waiting for an "Egyptian" successor to Cleopatra VII.- I'm all outa gum !!!
Thanks for clearing that up, Rayban35. We'll send the translators to the Coliseum. Oh, by the way, have a piece of gum !!!
Haha! Well in that case we really would need a wide net! As she was the end of the line. A more interesting question would be, "who was the last native Egyptian ruler?" I'll give a hint: it wasn't the ruler before the Ptolemies nor Alexander the Great himself. We have to go back further than that...
There is, and I hope you'll agree, Ryro, such a thing as being an adoptive citizen, or native. Some "Americans" or "Britts" are often from a multitude of countries. Both those nations, and probably many others, are "melting pots". Even Cleopatra's Egypt, to a lesser degree, my have been a "melting pot". To go further back in Egypt's history, would be interesting, maybe well before the pyramids. We might discover something about the original Egyptian "Flintstones" !!!
The last "Egyptian" ruler was Nectanebo II. After him we have Persians followed by Alex the Great. https://pharaoh.se/comparing-manetho
