This reminds me of the Ancient Egyptians who were able to bore through granite and other rocks. It seems like modern drilling, but precise boring technology has existed for millennia. It must've been tough to do, especially since it looks like you can make money with it, too. Interesting stuff. Solid slabs of rock and granite with bored holes by Ancient Egyptians:
Imagine paying for something with that thing, how do you make change? Chip off a piece and give it back.
Maybe they rolled it over, seeing as how it's wheel-shaped, or at least probably more circular in its heyday. This is a bit of a tangent, but I know that the natives of Easter Island used to fight wars over a rock known as Pu o Hiro. It was a status symbol, and that rock definitely wasn't moved. The tribe that took over the territory would own the rock. Of course, Easter Island is quite far from Yap Island, but it's thought that Polynesians settled on Easter Island. The value placed on rocks seems to have been brought over with those settlers. Though, this is very distinct from Rai stone money. I believe that the story goes that if you blow into the holes, it'll make a sound to attract fish or something similar to that effect. Hence the mystical attachment and value placed on such a rock.
Ya know, I've had non-collectors apply that same phrase to we collectors who spend hundreds of dollars for an ounce or less of silver. However, that holy rock has zero appeal for me. Cal
Anyone willing to pay 12,500$ for some old rock with a few holes, needs a course of trepanning - "treatment" for our ancestors, consisting of drilling a hole in their head. That should either cure you or kill you !!!
You are probably too young to remember the Pet Rock craze of the early 1970s. My little sister had a half dozen of these things sitting around her room. IIRC they even made the boxes that they came in to look like a little kennel, and there were several varieties so that the pet owner could have more than one.
