1987 penny

    There is a weird ring around this penny... what happened?

    I am not an errors guy but do pay attention to the knowledgeable guys that post here. This one has my interest piqued. I don't have your answer but this one interest's me. Looking forward to what the guys in the know have to say.

    Edit.... More I think about it.... The errors experts will likely need to see a full view of your cent. Can you take a full image shot?

    How does that one happen, Paddy? It appears to me that the lettering is over the rim of the cent. Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

    Remember that the letters are incused into the Die that is used to strike the blank Planchet. After thousands of strikes the surface of the Die gets worn creating that ring but the letters will still look raised.

    I've seen so many of these that I now call them "ridge runners". Seem to be mostly in the 80's cents.
