Some kind of token - from the text my guess would be a political token from Jackson's (successful) 1828 campaign for election as 7th President of the U.S. Value? Ask a Jackson memorabilia collector.
I'll add that it's 23mm in diameter and looks like brass. ...just checked eBay again and found this. If it's really worth a couple of hundred dollars, I got one heck of a deal.
Don't count on it. The auction has been up for nearly five days with no bids, at a quarter of the "value" suggested by a seller who substitutes hype for decent photos, and uses the scammer's friend "private" auction. Although the description matches yours, there's no way to verify that from the photo, or to determine the condition of his.
I put a "watch" on the item. $49 sounds pretty high for a starting bid. I was wondering where he got the "estimated value". I still don't know much about the token.
That token is an 1824 Andrew Jackson political campaign medal. It is listed in the bible of early political tokens "American Political Badges and Medalets" by Ed Sullivan... It is listed there as # AJACK-1824-4. I have sold dozens of those over the years. The scan is nice (not the one in the eBay ad which is too dark) and I would grade it as XF. I estimate its worth at $125.00. Its a little weakly struck as most are.
Thanks MikeG! I picked it up for $8. The same place had lots of Morgans that were high priced. Wasn't sure if this was a deal or not. I liked the way it looked. Thanks again for the details.
